What to bring for a day of climbing
I am so excited to get out climbing with you! While each day of climbing will be unique, the following packing list will serve as general resource for what to bring. Before your trip, check the local weather so you can pack layers accordingly.
Food and water for the duration of the outing. Snacks and 1 liter of water should get you through 4 hours, no problem. For 8 hours, add lunch or more snacks (if that’s your style) and another 1-2 liters of water.
Clothing for the day. The temperatures in Joshua Tree can be variable so it’s best to dress in layers. On cooler days it’s nice to have a fleece or puffy jacket to wear when you’re not climbing. If there’s any wind or chance of rain, please bring a rain jacket (rain jackets double as a wind layer!). Pants are not required but can be nice to protect your knees and legs from minor scrapes as the rocks can be abrasive in Joshua Tree, which is a fair trade off for the wonderful friction that rock provides for climbing. Otherwise, wear clothes that are comfortable for activity!
Closed-toe Shoes. Often getting to the climbs involves walking across boulders and uneven ground, so closed-toe shoes are required to protect your feet. Plus there are plenty of spiky plants in desert….nobody likes a cholla bulb stuck in their foot.
Sun Protection. The desert sun is very strong so it’s important to bring sunglasses, sunblock, and a brimmed hat (hats can be worn under helmets if desired). Long-sleeved shirts or sun hoodies can be nice too so you don’t have to constantly re-apply sunblock. To maximize comfort, during the colder months (Dec-Feb) we will likely climb in the sun. During the warmer months (Oct-Nov + Mar-May) we will likely climb in the shade.
Medications.
Hand Sanitizer. The pit toilets in park do not have running water. I will have extra sanitizer with me.
Joshua Tree National Park entrance pass. Every car entering the park will need to have an entrance pass. The cheapest option is currently $30 for a 7-day pass. These can be purchased at the Joshua Tree Visitor Center or online before we meet, but can also be purchased at the entrance gate on our way into the park. After meeting for the day we will caravan into the national park in our own vehicles.
(optional) Personal Climbing Equipment. Rental climbing equipment is included in the cost of all trips. I will collect your sizing info on the Participant Questionnaire. However, if you own any of your own gear, please bring it, especially shoes. For instructional courses, feel free to bring any of your own rack or ropes if you have them.
What I will bring:
Requested participant rental equipment
All other equipment needed for climbing
First Aid Kit
Satellite Communication Device
Positive Energy, Professionalism and Expertise!
See you soon!
